1. “Both Sides Now”
Mitchell wrote what’s considered by many to be her most popular song, “Both Sides Now,” in March of 1967 when she was 25. She first recorded it on her 1969 album, Clouds, but not before Judy Collins recorded it for her 1967 album Wildflowers. Collins released the single in 1968 which peaked at No. 8 on the pop singles charts and won her a Grammy Award in 1969 for Best Folk Performance. So, oddly enough, the song is considered a signature song for both Collins and Mitchell.
According to JoniMitchell.com, the song has been covered 1,027 times to date. Rolling Stone has ranked the song #171 on their “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list.
Mitchell recorded a more somber version of the song again in 2000, for her album, Both Sides Now, with a full orchestra and a deeper voice - literally and metaphorically. It’s only right that you take the opportunity to experience both versions here, one at age 25 and the other in her late 50s. A different perspective is definitely conveyed and will be appreciated.
