4. “After Midnight”
Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett introduced Clapton to the music of J.J. Cale. Clapton covered this and other Cale songs during his career. He and Cale recorded an album together in 2006 called The Road to Escondido. The album won a Grammy in 2008 for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Clapton released this cover of Cale’s 1966 song, “After Midnight,” on his self-titled debut album of 1970. The song reached #18 on the Billboard chart. Clapton’s success with the song helped propel Cale’s solo career.
