5. “Layla (Unplugged)”
Just when you think a song as perfect as the original “Layla” could never be redone in any other way, shape or form than the original, Clapton comes along in 1992 and plays a set for the MTV Unplugged series, releasing an album of the event called Unplugged. The unsuspecting crowd was amazed when Clapton introduced a song by saying, “See if you can spot this one.” He proceeded to blow everyone away with his reinterpretation of the song, omitting the fiery riffs, the piano coda and the singing voice of a tortured soul. The song, the new “unplugged” song, that is, went on to reach No. 12 on the U.S. pop chart and win the Grammy for Best Rock Song, a huge upset for competing song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana.
