7. “Cocaine”
Written and originally performed by J.J. Cale in 1976, the cover of “Cocaine” by Clapton on his 1977 album, Slowhand, made Cale and the song both famous. Clapton didn’t play the song at many concerts at first, because he knew that it was quite often mistaken as a pro-drug song. That is why, in later concerts, as in the video below from a 2004 concert, Clapton added the lyric, “that dirty cocaine,” in the chorus, to emphasize that the song is actually an anti-drug song. As Clapton explained,
It’s no good to write a deliberate anti-drug song and hope that it will catch. Because the general thing is that people will be upset by that...So the best thing to do is offer something that seems ambiguous...If you study it or look at it with a little bit of thought … from a distance … or as it goes by … it just sounds like a song about cocaine. But actually, it is quite cleverly anti-cocaine.
