8. “I Shot the Sheriff”
In the early ‘70s, Clapton had to fight some personal demons including heroin addiction, so he removed himself from public life. After the “Rainbow” concert in 1973, which Pete Townshend organized as a comeback for Clapton, Clapton hired a touring band and began playing again. His first album to follow was 461 Ocean Boulevard in 1974. On this album, Clapton brought reggae to the mainstream when he covered Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff.” It was Clapton’s first No. 1 single, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003.
