Author Amy Tan has fascinated readers for years with her beautiful novels such as The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God’s Wife and The Valley of Amazement. However, a new topic is in one of her books now: her struggle with Lyme disease. In The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings, Tan discusses this illness among other subjects. According to People, her symptoms included frightening hallucinations, joint pain, insomnia, odd rashes and numbness. She told the magazine she also struggled with anxiety: “I had this overwhelming feeling that somebody was about to attack me.” After finally being diagnosed with Lyme disease, Tan began to advocate for others with the disease with her charity LymeAid 4 Kids, which the Lyme Disease Association, Inc. recommends because it helps uninsured children receive treatment for Lyme disease.
