Toho gives details on new Japanese 'Godzilla' movie

Gareth Edwards' Godzilla hit theaters last summer and was a pretty satisfying reboot of the franchise, but for hardcore fans, it still wasn't quite the real thing. Now we're finding out we'll be getting more of the real thing very soon.

According to Variety, Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi will direct a new Japanese Godzilla film, Godzilla 2016. This will be Toho's official return to the Godzilla franchise, over ten years after Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004.

In a statement, Toho said that since Godzilla returned in America, fans have been expecting another Japanese version, and so the studio decided to turn to creators who were passionate about the franchise. Anno is known for the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, though he has also directed a number of live-action films in Japan. Higuchi also comes from the anime world, known for his work on Attack on Titan.

The two will co-direct the film together. Anno will also write the film's screenplay. They previously worked together on God Warrior Appears in Tokyo.

Godzilla 2016 will be the 29th film in the Godzilla franchise, not counting the American films. The last movie, Godzilla: Final Wars, gave Godzilla a break as Toho often does, but it was always just a matter of time before he came back. The revitalization of the character with the most recent film was the perfect opportunity. Final Wars was a financial disappointment for Toho, grossing only $12 million, but the 2014 American Godzilla made over $500 million worldwide, according to box office mojo

This means that we'll now be having American and Japanese versions of Godzilla running at the same time. Gareth Edwards is currently working on Godzilla 2, the sequel to his 2014 film to be released on June 8, 2018. That movie is looking to be pretty insane, featuring Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidora, according to ScreenRant.

Between a sequel to the awesome American version and the return of the classic Toho version, it's a pretty great time to be a Godzilla fan. Long live the king of the monsters.
