Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is now on its third studio. The film adaptation of King’s ambitious series, which counts Ron Howard among the producers, is now at Sony.
Sony Pictures is teaming up with Media Rights Capital for the project, according to Deadline. In addition to the movie series, MRC is hoping to develop a companion TV series.
The first film will be based mostly on the first book, The Gunslinger, with a script by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. They worked on the script from scratch, rejecting the previous versions that were developed at Universal and Warner Bros.
Still, Imagine Entertainment’s Howard, Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins are producing with Goldsman. Pinkner will be an executive producer and King will still be attached as a producer.
This project has been in the works for years. It started at Universal in 2011, then moved to Warner Bros., where there was a rumor that Howard wanted Russell Crowe to star as gunslinger Roland Deschain. Javier Bardem was also attached to the role at one point. However, Warner Bros. passed on the project in August 2012.
Grazer did once suggest that HBO might be the best place for The Dark Tower, but clearly a deal there never materialized.
Even though it took so long, King is excited that the project is getting on the screen.
“I’m excited that The Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen,” King told Deadline in a statement. “Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books.”
The Dark Tower will be the first franchise brought to Sony since new Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman replaced Amy Pascal.
