Shawn Mendes tops Billboard 200 with debut album, knocks 'Furious 7' from No. 1 slot

Shawn Mendes has turned his Vine stardom into mainstream success thanks to Handwritten, his first album. The record topped the Billboard 200 chart, making him the youngest solo artist to top the chart since Justin Bieber.

Handwritten scored 119,000 units moved during the week that ended on April 19, according to Nielsen Music stats. Billboard notes that an astonishing 106,000 units were actual album sales. The rest of that number is made up of streams and digital track sales.

Mendes is just 16 years and 8 months old, making him the youngest solo artist to top the chart since Bieber’s My World 2.0 was No. 1 in May 2010. Bieber was 16 years and 2 months old at the time.

Furious 7 topped the chart last week, but it fell to No. 2 in its fifth week. The album moved 79,000 units and has already outsold the last three The Fast And The Furious soundtracks.

Country legend Reba McEntire returned with Love Somebody, which debuted with 62,000 units. Tyler, The Creator’s Cherry Bomb, which was released online early on April 13, debuted with 58,000 units.

The last debut in the Top 10 is Halestorm’s Into The Wild Life, which moved 56,000 units.
