Washington Redskins have decided to stick with quarterback Robert Griffin III through 2016, despite his struggles to stay on the field since his remarkable rookie year.
The decision means that Griffin will make even more money through the 2016 season. According to ESPN, he has a $3.27 million base salary for the 2015 season. He will made $16.2 million in 2016.
The Washington Post reports that the Redskins had until May 3 to make a decision. If they didn’t pick up the option, RGIII would have become a free agent at the end of this season.
Head coach Jay Gruden has already named Griffin the starter for 2015, despite a rocky 2014 season. Griffin only started seven games last season, winning just two of those. Griffin suffered an ankle injury and only through for 1,694 yards and four touchdowns with six interceptions.
He only won three of his 13 starts in his second year, a major drop from his nine-win rookie season, which was enough to win the NFC East that year. Griffin even made the Pro Bowl that year.
