R2-D2 has enough to put up with, from C-3PO’s constant complaining to trying to help Luke Skywalker save the galaxy. So, he deserves a little love. After searching the galaxy, he finally found someone to care for in a really cool short film.

In Evan Atherton’s Artoo In Love, the plucky astromech droid first finds love in a mailbox, only to learn the sad truth about the box’s love life. After more scenes of sadness, Artoo may finally have found the droid he was looking for.
“People have definitely been having real emotional reactions to it,” Atherton, an engineer at Autodesk, told Mashable. “I think that stems from what always made Artoo special: He was more than just a machine. So seeing that play out, and seeing Artoo really sad, tugs on some childhood heartstrings.”
In addition to getting help from the international R2 Builders’ Club, which builds real-life R2 units like the ones in the Star Wars movies, he also needed help creating the rain. After all, the Bay Area is still in a drought. Lucasfilm effects artist Landis Fields actually created the rain seen in the film.
The video might not be as intensive to create as the awesome TIE Fighter animated short from last week, but it certainly is more adorable.
