Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount suspended for season opener for substance abuse violation

New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount has been suspended by the NFL for the 2015 season opener for violating the substance abuse policy last year.

Back on Aug. 20, Blount and then-teammate Le’Veon Bell of the Pittsburgh Steelers were arrested when police found marijuana in Bell’s car during a traffic stop near Pittsburgh. As ESPN notes, Blout reached a plea deal and had to do 50 hours of community service by Feb. 4.

Bell hasn’t been suspended yet, but he will likely get at least the first two games of the 2015 season, ESPN reports.

According to NFL.com, Blount will be able to attend offseason and preseason practice and will be able to play starting in Week 2.

Blount began his career with the Buccaneers and first joined the Patriots in 2013. He played the first 11 games of the 2014 season with the Steelers and only had 266 yards. The Steelers released him and the Patriots snapped him up. During the final five games with the Patriots, Blount exploded, running for 281 yards. During the 2014 postseason, he ran for 189 yards, including 40 yards in the Super Bowl.
