One person was killed and several others were injured after tornadoes swept through the Illinois town of Fairdale and the surrounding communities.
The Associated Press reported that the deceased was a 67-year-old woman, who was found dead in her home. Additionally, seven other people were injured after twisters touched down on Thursday night.
The Weather Service said that more tornadoes may have hit eastern Iowa, but so far no injuries were reported in that state.
The Chicago Tribune noted that according to the National Weather Service, at least two tornadoes ripped through the area, flattening buildings and homes in its path.
Some farmers said that much of their livestock was either missing or dead.
Search and rescue workers are still trying to locate any survivors who might be trapped in their homes or under rubble.
Around 850 flights out of Chicago’s O’ Hare were canceled due to the weather.
The severe weather is expected to move through the Eastern U.S. on Friday.
Fairdale is small town roughly about 80 miles from Chicago.
