Netflix scores Ricky Gervais movie 'Special Correspondents' with Eric Bana

Ricky Gervais is expanding his relationship with Netflix, since the streaming service picked up his feature film Special Correspondents. The comedy will also star Eric Bana.

In the film, Bana stars as an arrogant New York radio journalist who has let his own ego get in the way of his career. So, he starts filing fake war reports, broadcast from a Spanish restaurant in the middle of Manhattan.

Gervais wrote and directed the film and he also co-stars with Bana. Netflix will release it worldwide next year.

“Having shaken up the TV industry, Netflix is about to do the same to Hollywood. It's great to be part of the changing future,” Gervais said in a statement. “[Netflix chief content officer] Ted Sarandos is the new Godfather of entertainment and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse.”

Gervais is best known for starring in the original U.K. series The Office and also stars in Netflix’s Derek. He recently appeared on the big screen in Muppets Most Wanted. He co-directed 2010’s Cemetary Junction with Stephen Merchant and 2009’s The Invention of Lying with Matthew Robinson.

As for Bana, he started his career in sketch comedy with Full Frontal. The Australian actor’s credits also include Munich, Black Hawk Down, The Time Traveler’s Wife and Star Trek. He will also be seen in Guy Ritchie’s Nights of the Round Table: King Arthur.

Netflix has continued to add more feature films, especially since it made a splash last month by picking up Beasts with No Nation starring Idris Elba.
