The earth has so many wonders that there was only so much that could fit in the original beloved Planet Earth series. More natural wonders will get their chance in the spotlight in the sequel, Our Planet, which just found a home on Netflix.
The streaming service announced today that Our Planet will feature eight episodes, which will be posted in 2019, exclusively on Netflix around the world. Silverback Films, which produced Planet Earth, Frozen Planet and Blue Planet for the BBC, will also produce Our Planet with WWF.
Silverback has also produced many of Disney’s popular Disneynature films, including Chimpanzee and Bears.
Our Planet was produced over four years and features areas of the world that have never been filmed before, from the ice caps to the deserts and forests. Viewers will get to see species that they’ve never seen before and places that are in danger thanks to pollution and global warming.
“Netflix is proud to be the global home for perhaps Silverback’s most ambitious project to date,” Lisa Nishimura, Vice President, Netflix Original Documentaries, said in a statement. “The Planet projects have enjoyed great success on Netflix and have helped launch new technologies for viewing at home. We think watching Our Planet, fully on demand in 4K will be an unforgettable experience for our members.”
The original Planet Earth series premiered in 2006 and won four Emmys, including Outstanding Nonfiction series.
