While it was only one lie that forced NBC News to suspend Brian Williams for six months, their investigation into his work has reportedly found at least 11 other instances of embellishment in his reporting and storytelling.
Two sources with knowledge of the NBC News investigation told The New York Times on Friday that there are several other instances that are under investigation beyond his incorrect story about being in a helicopter that was hit by an RPG in Iraq in 2003.
The others include another helicopter trip in Israel in 2006; how he may have obtained a piece of the helicopter that crashed during Seal Team 6’s mission to kill Osama Bin Laden in 2011; and a story he told Jon Stewart on The Daily Show about his time reporting in Cairo’s Tahrir Square during the arab Spring.
On Saturday, a source for the Washington Post said that there are up to 11 statements that the investigation has honed in on.
The investigation is being lead by NBC News senior executive producer Richard Esposito and was launched after Williams admitted to Stars and Stripes that his repeated Iraq helicopter story was embellished. Williams was then suspended for six months without pay. It’s not known if Esposito’s findings would ever be made public or when NBC News will make a final decision on Williams’ future.
Williams, his lawyer, NBC News and Esposito did not provide comments for the Times or Post reports.
