MTV2 reviving 'Celebrity Deathmatch' animated hit

MTV2 announced this morning that it has ordered a pilot for a Celebrity Deathmatch revival. In addition, Charlamagne Tha God will host a new show and rapper Tyga will star in a new docuseries.

The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and later confirmed by MTV on Twitter.

The reimagined Celebrity Deathmatch will have creator Eric Fogel onboard as an executive producer with Chris McCarthy and Paul Ricci. It will still be animated, but be updated to feature social media’s now-important place in real-life celebrity battles. Hopefully, it will still be done in stop-motion animation.

Deathmatch ran from 1998 to 2002 with 75 episodes on MTV. It was revived by MTV2 in 2005 and then cancelled again in 2007. It was originally produced by Cuppa Coffee Studios. The revival will be produced by Wasteland Entertainment.

Although Charlemagne will host his own comedy talk show, he admitted on Twitter that he’s more interested in Deathmatch than his own show.

MTV2 also ordered the six-episode docuseries Kingin’ With Tyga, which will follow Tygas attempts of crazy stunts.
