Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock is speaking out about one member of One Direction’s sudden change in direction. Spurlock, who directed the group’s This Is Us film, said he actually “shed a little tear” when Zayn Malik made his decision.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Super Size Me director said, “Like everyone else, a little piece of my heart broke the day Zayn left... I shed a little tear.”
Seriously though, he completely understood why Malik would want to leave that exhausting lifestyle, when you are constantly touring.
“...I think that it just gets hard after awhile, for someone, probably like Zayn, who is a homebody already, but is also incredibly talented, the allure of being able to potentially leave and become a solo artist in the midst of all your success is probably better than waiting till the end,” Spurlock said.
As Billboard points out, Spurlock also spoke with HuffPost Live about Malik leaving, noting that Malik was “probably my favorite guy in the band.” Spurlock also further explained that Malik struggled with being on the road constantly and really enjoyed being home.
Back on March 19, Malik announced that he was leaving a 1D tour early. Then on March 25, the world shook as Malik announced that he was leaving the group for good.
“I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight,” Malik said. “I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
