Michael Keaton tells David Letterman about the moment he knew he lost the Best Actor Oscar

Michael Keaton went to the Academy Awards ceremony in February knowing that he wasn’t going to win Best Actor. At least, that’s what he told David Letterman last night.

While on The Late Show for one of Letterman’s final episodes before his retirement, Keaton told a story about his experience at the annual Academy luncheon for nominees. It’s an event where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences gather all the nominees to take a class picture and gives them a chance to meet other Academy members.

Keaton said that he got into a conversation with an older Academy member who just couldn’t stop talking about how great his performance in Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman was. He had even gone back to the theater to see the film a second time.

The actor was a bit uncomfortable at first, but he was about to walk away thinking, “I am a lock.”

However, the man pulled Keaton back and told him the nasty truth about the Oscars. “Uh, just remember Michael, when it comes to winning an Academy Award, illness always wins!”

“And then I thought, I am f’ed right now. It’s over!”

The Academy member was right. Eddie Redmayne, who played Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything, ended up winning.
