Art pieces that once belonged to Hollywood icon Lauren Bacall were auctioned off on Tuesday and Wednesday, with every single lot getting snapped up by buyers. Bonhams New York said today that the auction totaled $3.64 million.
The highest-selling single item was American White Pelican, an 1863 engraving by John Hams Audubon. It went for an astonishing $173,000, beating the $60,000 estimate. One lot that featured two landscapes by American artist Albert York went for $161,000, a record for the artist.
Three-Quarter Mother and Child, a sculpture by British sculptor Henry Moore sold for $118,000. Moore was a close friend of Bacall’s and six of his sculptures were featured in the auction. Bonhams sold two other Moore sculptures that Bacall owned in a November modern art sale.
Items related to Bacall’s relationship with Humphrey Bogart also went far above estimates. A Hartmann ‘Turn Table’ steamer trunk owned by Bogart went for $47,500, even though the estimate was just $1,500.
The most expensive piece of jewelry at the sale was a Jean Schlumberger 18-carat gold, diamond, amethyst and turquoise ring, which went for $52,500.
Bacall died in August at age 89.
