Johnny Depp's injury continues 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' production delay

Johnny Depp’s hand injury has turned out to be a bigger deal than previously thought, so the production delay on Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will continue. Captain Jack Sparrow is such a big part of the new film that the production ran out of scenes to film without him.

Back in March, Disney was sure that the production schedule would be “minimally impacted” because they could continue filming without him. Depp had to go back to the U.S. for hand surgery.

Australian media reports stated that 200 crewmembers were told that they wouldn’t be working for two more weeks because of Depp’s injury. Now, filming won’t start up again until April 15, reports E! News.

“They've tried to keep it going in his absence – it's not like a Fast and Furious situation, where the star has died – but they've reached the pinch point,” Mal Tulloch of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance union, told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Production on the film had started in February. Depp’s co-stars include Geoffrey Rush, Brenton Thwaites, Javier Bardem and Kaya Scodelario.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is currently scheduled for July 7, 2017. Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg (Kon Tiki) are directing.
