Jemime Kirke of HBO’s Girls fame is speaking out in a PSA about an abortion she had in college. She’s now a mother of two.
She talked openly about it for the Center for Reproductive Rights' Draw the Line campaign, saying she wasn’t ready for a child at the time.
“I couldn't tell my mother that I was pregnant, I had to pay for it out of pocket. I did have to empty my checking account, what I had in there, and get some from my boyfriend,” she explained, saying she got pregnant at a time that "was not conducive to raising a happy, healthy child."
Kirke also said she was unsure if she wanted to be “attached” to her then-boyfriend for the rest of her life.
People reports this happened in 2007 when Kirke was going to college in Providence, Rhode Island.
She said she didn’t go under anesthesia because she needed to save money. “The anesthesia was only, it wasn't that much more, but when you're scrounging for however many hundreds of dollars, it is a lot. I just didn't have it,” she said.
The campaign, which Padma Lakshmi and Mark Ruffalo are also part of, advocates for reproductive health care.
