'Furious 7' gets off to franchise-best box office start with Thursday screenings

Universal’s Furious 7 got out of the gate quickly, earning $15.8 million just from Thursday night screenings.

That’s the best early screenings start for the Fast & Furious franchise. It’s almost $10 million more than Fast and Furious 6’s early screenings. That film earned $6.5 million on the Thursday before its opening weekend in May 2013, notes Variety.

Furious 7 did have the advantage of having more early showings, as screenings started at 7 p.m. last night at 3,069 locations. The film expands to 4,004 locations today.

The new film is widely expected to break the record for April debuts. It has to pass last year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which debuted with $95 million. Furious 7 should be able to hit $100 million.

Universal is also giving the film a wide international release this weekend. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the film will be hitting 63 territories this weekend, although that doesn’t include Russia, Japan and China.

Furious 7 is the last film to feature Paul Walker, who died in November 2013.
