Fox starts work on 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' sequel

Fox has started working on a sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s surprise hit comic book adaptation, Kingsman: The Secret Service. Despite the R-rating and a little-known star at the front, the film has become an international success.

News of the sequel was first reported by TheWrap.

It was clear that the film, based on comics written by Kick-Ass’ Mark Millar, was going to be a hit the moment it opened on Valentine’s Day weekend. Despite competition from Fifty Shades of Grey, it still opened to an impressive $41 million. In addition, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed today that the film has hit $401.8 million internationally. It has made $126.6 million domestically and is still in some theaters.

Notably, Kingsman did not feature a known star. Despite Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine all appearing, they have supporting parts behind young star Taron Egerton.

Vaughn already said in February that Firth will likely appear in the sequel, but it’s not clear how involved Vaughn can be. He’s a prolific producer of comic book movies, even signing on to executive produce Sony’s Valiant movies. He’s also reportedly in talks for Fox’s Flash Gordon. It really depends on how soon Fox wants Kingsman 2 to hit theaters.
