After getting two incredible performances out of his stars for Whiplash, Damien Chazelle is only getting more ambitious. His new film could star Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.
The new film is called La La Land and will be a musical, giving Stone a chance to introduce moviegoers to the pipes heard on Broadway in Cabaret. According to Deadline, the script was written before Whiplash and is about the love between a jazz pianist and an actress hoping to break through in Hollywood.
TheWrap reports that Emma Watson was wanted for the lead female role, but she moved on for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Chazelle also wanted to work with Whiplash’s Miles Teller again, but he left. The director then asked Eddie Redmayne, but Redmayne went for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them instead.
Stone and Gosling already worked together in Gangster Squad. She will also be seen in Cameron Crowe’s Aloha and Woody Allen’s Irrational Man this summer. She just earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for Birdman.
As for Gosling, he just directed his first movie, Lost River. He will next be seen in front of the camera in 2016’s The Nice Guys and an upcoming Terrence Malick film.
Chazelle’s Whiplash earned widespread critical acclaim and won three Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons. It was also nominated for Best Picture. He definitely has music in his creative veins, as his debut feature, 2009’s Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, was also about a musician.
