A student at Duke University admitted to being the person who hung a noose from a tree at the campus.
The Associated Press reported that the student, only identified as an undergraduate, told university officials that they placed the noose in the tree at a plaza not far from the Duke Chapel. The student admitted to the deplorable action after other students came forward with information and the person's identity.
University spokesman Michael Schoenfeld said that the student has left the campus on their own accord as officials work out proper disciplinary action which could led to a suspension or expulsion. Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities are trying to determine if the student should face criminal charges.
Duke President Richard Brodhead spoke to students after the incident and said that the type of behavior will not be accepted at the school.
CNN noted that this is the latest in a string of racist incidents involving college students.
In March, a racist video of University of Oklahoma fraternity brothers surfaced online. The frat house was immediately shut down and two students were expelled. And, in February, at the University of Mississippi a noose was placed around the neck of a statue of a civil rights figure.
