David Letterman says he wasn't consulted about 'Late Show' successor Stephen Colbert

David Letterman is less than a month away from beginning his retirement and handing over CBS’ Late Show to Stephen Colbert. While it would seem that the network would have wanted his advice when it came to picking a successor, he said that CBS never approached him.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Letterman said that his top picks would have been The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart or Colbert anyway. He also thought it was a good opportunity to give a network late night show to a black comic or a woman.

“When we sign off, we’re out of business with CBS,” Letterman said. “I always thought Jon Stewart would have been a good choice. And then Stephen. And then I thought, well, maybe this will be a good opportunity to put a black person on, and it would be a good opportunity to put a woman on. Because there are certainly a lot of very funny women that have television shows everywhere. So that would have made sense to me as well.”

Letterman confirmed that CBS never consulted him, which did bother him a little bit. He wished that someone asked for his opinion, but he’s over that already.

Colbert was picked to replace Letterman just a week after he announced his plans to retire this year. Although they have talked about how Colbert will host the show, Letterman sounded confident that he is leaving the show in good hands.

“We chatted when the announcement was made. And that was about it. I don’t think he needs — he’s not a kid. He’s not a beginner. He’s had pretty good success,” Letterman told the Times.

Letterman’s last episode is set for May 20. On May 4, CBS will air a 90-minute tribute show, with Ray Romano hosting.
