David Bowie takes on new off Broadway project based on 'The Man Who Fell To Earth'

David Bowie plans to do something new off Broadway, collaborating with the off Broadway company New York Theater Workshop on Lazarus, based on the cult sci-fi film The Man Who Fell To Earth.

While Bowie won’t act in the production, he is set to write the play with Tony winner Edna Walsh (Once). According to The New York Times, Bowei will also write new songs and make new arrangements of his old hits.

The story will focus on Thomas Newton, the alien Bowie played in the 1976 film directed by Nicolas Roeg. The movie was based on the novel by Walter Tevis.

Lazarus will definitely feel a bit different from other musicals or plays off and on Broadway. Ivo van Hove, an avant-garde Belgian director, will be helming the production. Van Hove’s previous work with New York Theater Workshop includes productions of A Streetcar Named Desire and The Little Foxes.

As The Hollywood Reporter points out, there are no set dates or venue for Lazarus. Casting will be announced later.

New York Theater Workshop is also staging Sibyl Kempson’s new Fondly, Collette Richland this season. It features new compositions by Mike Iveson, who will also perform.

As for Bowie, the last time he worked in the theatrical realm was in 1980, when he starred on Broadway in The Elephant Man.
