Danny Trejo says 'Machete Kills Again In Space' will film this year

It looked like it would probably never happen, but according to Danny Trejo, we may actually see more of Machete after all.

According to Halloween Daily News, Danny Trejo said at Mad Monster Party that Machete Kills Again In Space will begin filming this year.

No more word about the movie aside from that confirmation that Trejo and Robert Rodriguez are working on it, but the fact that the movie is even happening is pretty surprising. The last film, Machete Kills, made only $15 million worldwide and $8 million domestically. Its opening weekend was an insanely low $3 million. If Trejo is correct and this is happening, the new movie must be straight to DVD, because what studio in their right mind would fund a sequel to a movie that performed so poorly?

The Machete franchise is pretty interesting because it began basically as a joke. Initially, the movie was just a fake trailer included in Grindhouse, playing before Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror. But then the joke became real, and the fake Machete movie was actually made three years later. Then Machete ended by advertising two sequels, the next one being Machete Kills. That seemed to basically just be a gag, fitting with the format of these bad exploitation movies. But then Machete Kills actually happened, hitting theaters three years later.

Machete Kills also actually ended with a fake trailer for Machete Kills Again in Space. This again seemed to mostly be a gag, with Rodriguez going all out knowing this was probably the end for Machete. But no, that insane sci-fi sequel, which looks to basically turn Machete into a hilarious Star Wars ripoff, is actually happening. What a strange series of events for this franchise.
