Daniel Radcliffe, Bill Paxton to star in BBC movie about 'Grand Theft Auto'

A Grand Theft Auto movie is in the works, but it’s not what you might think. Instead of a film version of the popular video game, BBC Films plans on making a movie about the controversy that surrounded the original 1997 game. Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton are set to star.

News of the project first surfaced late last week. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Radcliffe will star as Sam Houser, the British co-founder of Rockstar Games. The studio produced GTA, as well as Max Payne and Red Dead.

Rockstar and GTA were frequently targeted by activist attorney Jack Thompson, who was disbarred in 2008. The Florida attorney often went after the media for allegedly pushing rap and sex into the mainstream, so GTA was among his targets.

Today, Deadline confirmed that Bill Paxton will star as Thompson.

James Wood’s script is based on David Kusher’s 2012 book Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto. Filming will star in South Africa next week, with Owen Harris (Kill Your Friends) directing.

Paxton was just seen in Nightcrawler and will next be seen on TV in Texas Rising. As for Radcliffe, he’s finishing work on Victor Frankenstein, in which he stars as Igor.
