Closing arguments by defense attorneys for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, are scheduled to begin in federal court on Monday morning.
The New York Times reported that the defense will have one last chance to sway the minds of the jurors after powerful testimony by dozens of witnesses and victims of the attack.
The Associated Press noted that prosecutors have focused on who carried out the brutal attack, while the defense team has not denied Tsaenaev’s involvement, but said he was under his brother’s influence.
“It was him,” lead defense lawyer, Judy Clarke told the jury during her opening statements last month.
Since then, the defense has been that Tsarnaev’s older brother Tamerlan, who was killed in a shootout with police, was the master-mind behind the attack.
On April 15, 2013, two pressure cooker bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon killing three people and injuring more than 260 others. Tsarnaev and his sibling were accused of detonating the explosives. After his brother was killed Tsaenaev led police on a manhunt in and around Boston before he was captured and taken into custody.
If he is found guilty of the charges against him, he could face the death penalty.
