Carson City Council approves plan for Chargers, Raiders NFL stadium

The Carson, California City Council voted unanimously to approve the construction of a $1.7 billion stadium that could bring the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders to the Los Angeles area.

The privately funded project was only announced in February after the Chargers and Raiders proposed that the idea of sharing a stadium. Now, the city council has approved the project.

“There are two things we need in California: rain … and football,” Carson Mayor Albert Robles said after the vote, reports the LA Times. “And football is coming to Carson!”

The 70,000-seat stadium would replace a former municipal landfil site next to the 405 Freeway. There could have been a public vote on the stadium in July or August, but the show of support from fans and team officials at the meeting persuaded the council to skip that step.

CBS Los Angeles notes that there was some opposition. One speaker said that the stadium would force him to give up his home.

In addition, the proposal doesn’t go into detail about how the stadium will be built and who will pay for it. The proposal says that only private funding will be used to built it.

There is also the possibility that Los Angeles could go from no NFL franchises to three very quickly. The Inglewood City Council also unanimously approved plans for a stadium there that would be home to the current St. Louis Rams franchise.

LA has been without an NFL team since 1994, when the Raiders left for Oakland and the Rams went to Se. Louis. The Chargers franchise only played a season in Los Angeles in 1960 before moving to San Diego.
