Anheuser-Busch has been called out and forced to apologize for an “Up For Whatever” tagline that appears on bottles of Bud Light. It essentially calls for people to get drunk so they can’t say ‘no’ and many on social media felt that it promoted rape.
On Monday, Reddit user GhosX9 noticed the tagline, writing “What the f**k Bud Light ?!?! Not cool man.” The tagline reads, “The perfect beer for removing ‘no’ from your vocabulary for the night.” It is part of the #UpForWhatever marketing campaign.
That Reddit post was picked up by The Consumerist and BuzzFeed. Some on Twitter suggested that the phrase practically promotes rape, because it suggests that if you give a person Bud Light, they can’t say “no.”
“Bud Light: The Rapey Beer,” one person wrote. Another added, “Remember kids, if she says ‘yes’ to a bud light, ‘no’ isn't in her vocabulary.”
Anheuser-Busch has quickly responded, apologizing. However, the company didn’t say it would pull bottles with the phrase.
“The Bud Light Up for Whatever campaign, now in its second year, has inspired millions of consumers to engage with our brand in a positive and light-hearted way,” the statement read. “In this spirit, we created more than 140 different scroll messages intended to encourage spontaneous fun. It’s clear that this message missed the mark, and we regret it. We would never condone disrespectful or irresponsible behavior.”
However, Bud Light has been criticized in the past for other #UpForWhatever tweets and messages. In March, they encouraged people to pinch anyone who wasn’t wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day.
