Bruce Lee Enterprises disputes use of computer-generated Bruce Lee in 'Ip Man 3'

The upcoming martial arts film Ip Man 3 was going to feature a computer-generated Bruce Lee, but it looks like the Lee estate might stop that from happening.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pegasus Motion Pictures announced that their upcoming film Ip Man 3 would include a young, computer-generated Bruce Lee. But Bruce Lee Enterprises is trying to stop this from happening, saying that they have ownership over the intellectual property rights related to Lee including his name, image, likeness, etc. They called the use of Lee's image "completely unauthorized."

Apparently Pegasus was working with Bruce Lee's brother Robert Lee, who they said owned the intellectual property rights of Bruce Lee. But Bruce Lee Enterprises disputed this, saying that Robert does not own the property rights and does not represent BLE.

When Slashfilm reported the use of a CGI Bruce Lee in the film, they noted that the producers wanted to do something similar for Ip Man 2, but they couldn't secure Lee's life rights in time for the release of that film. From that it sounded like this time they had secured the rights, but apparently Bruce Lee Enterprises was never on board.

Producer Raymond Wong said the matter is being worked out by lawyers, and we should expect further news in the next few days.

It's unclear what this means for Ip Man 3, which is already filming and aiming for a 2016 release. It sounds like the CGI Lee wasn't exactly a huge part of the movie, but this will still definitely be a setback for the production.
