Angie’s List CEO Bill Oesterle plans to re-enter state politics to fix Indiana's image

Indiana’s image took a beating when Gov. Mike Pene passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and Angie's List CEO Bill Oesterle thinks he knows how to fix it. The company, which is based in Indianapolis and was among the businesses that stood up against the law, announced today that he is stepping down to re-enter state politics.

Oesterle, 49, is the co-founder of the site and has been on the Board of Directors since it was created in 1995. He has also been the CEO since January 1999, overseeing the site’s growth. It is now one of the most popular sites to use to find local small businesses.

IndyStar reports that Angie’s List was planning a $40 million expansion for its campus, but that was put on hold when the RFRA was passed. Oesterle said that the law allows for discrimination against gays and lesbians and even said that the changes made to it were not enough.

Oesterle has worked in politics before, but not since 2004, when he managed former Gov. Mitch Daniels first election campaign. He plans to stay at the company until a successor is found.

“Serving Angie's List alongside its 1,900 dedicated employees and being part of this amazing company from the very beginning has been a privilege and a highlight of my professional career," Oesterle said in a statement. "I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished, especially seeing Angie's Listgrow to where we are now connecting millions of consumers across the country with leading service providers in their areas. The decision to leave was not an easy one. But as I begin the transition to the next chapter, I have great confidence in the Company's continued growth and prosperity and am committed to supporting a seamless transition."
