Three weeks after news broke that ABC is finally developing a new series starring The Muppets, we are learning more about the project. Get ready for a “more adult” look at the lives of Miss Piggy, Kermit The Frog and friends.
As previously reported, the new project is being put together by Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory with Rob Kushell (Anger Management). Randall Einhorn (Wilfred) was picked to direct a presentation reel for ABC, which could be shown at the upfront presentation for advertisers in May. Kushell would be the showrunner if it is picked up to go straight-to-series.
Entertainment Weekly shared some new details on the project, which aren’t too surprising considering the talent behind it. The new series will be about the Muppets trying to start a new Muppet Show, told in a 30 Rock style. It will also be made like a mockumentary, similar to The Office.
This will also be the first time the Muppets’ personal lives - beyond the relationship between Kermit and Miss Piggy - will be explored. ABC’s new logline even promises that it will be “more adult,” but still “for kids of all ages.”
“The Muppets return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that—for the first time ever—will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages,” ABC’s logline reads.
The Muppets haven’t been in a TV series since Muppets Tonight, which ended in 1998. Of course, Jim Henson introduced the Muppets on TV and The Muppet Show turned them into cultural icons. Disney has owned the characters since 2004 and produced two films - 2011’s The Muppets and 2014’s Muppets Most Wanted.
