Sometimes the teleprompter can be your enemy, but other times, it’s your friend. Terrence Howard learned that the hard way at the Oscars last month.

Howard was asked to do introductions for Best Picture nominees Whiplash and The Imitation Game at the Oscars. If he was talking about Selma, we could understand why he was getting so emotional, but he was weirdly devoted to these two movies. Suddenly, he was calling Whiplash “mindblowing” and then there was a loud “crash” noise while he was talking about The Imitation Game.
While on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote Empire last night, Howard finally got to explain what happened. He said that he got the script earlier that day and hoped to have it memorized because he wanted to one-up everyone who was relying on the teleprompter.
Then he got on the stage and he saw Oprah Winfrey... and then he saw Questlove... and then he forgot his speech. He did his best to remember and managed to get through it, while also trying to forget that he wasn’t wearing a belt.
Howard is clearly a good sport about it though, since he had a good laugh about the whole thing.
Howard currently stars on Empire, which airs on Fox on Wednesdays.
