Sen. Ted Cruz says he didn't like how Rock music responded to 9/11

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz started his media blitz today, just after announcing that he will be running for president in 2016. Part of the media tour has included questions about his personality, including his favorite music.

Towards the end of his CBS This Morning appearance today, Gayle King asked Cruz what television shows and music he likes. While he quickly said that he just finished House of Cards’ third season, music required a longer explanation.

Cruz said that he grew up a classic rock fan, but after 9/11, his taste suddenly changed.

“I actually intellectually find this very curious. But on 9/11, I didn't like how rock music responded,” Cruz explained, notes Rolling Stone. “And country music collectively, the way they responded, it resonated with me.”

After he started listening to country music, he had the realization that “these are my people.” He added, “So ever since 2001, I listen to country music. But I'm an odd country music fan, because I didn't listen to it prior to 2001.”

Cruz didn’t say specifically whose reaction to 9/11 disappointed him and didn’t even say which country artists he now likes. He might have missed the Concert For New York City, which was organized by Paul McCartney and featured several pop stars paying tribute to the city after the terrorist attacks.

Cruz ended the interview with his one-sentence pitch for why he should be president. “I'll tell the truth and I'll do what I said I would do,” he said.

The junior senator from Texas announced his plans to run for the Republican nomination on Monday.
