Transformers is already a pretty big franchise, but it’s obviously not big enough for Paramount. Today, it was reported that the studio contacted A Beautiful Mind writer Akiva Goldsman of all people to help expand the universe based on toys.
The news was first reported by Deadline. According to the site, Goldsman will have something akin to a “showrunner” role within a “writer’s room,” organized by him, director Michael Bay, executive producer Steven Spielberg and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. He isn’t going to specifically write a fifth Transformers movie, but will instead help hire other writers to do so and guide them.
TheWrap also reported on the plan, but Paramount has not commented on the reports.
Paramount’s move comes as the studio struggles to find its own powerhouse franchise. Sure, they have Star Trek, but the studio needs something even more expandable, like Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars universes. And there's no way to bet on Termintator Genisys being a hit.
It will be interesting to see if Bay really wants to come back to helm a fifth Transformers movie. He’s said before that he wants to take a break from the franchise and is currently working on the Benghazi movie 13 Hours. Of course, considering that Age of Extinction made over $1 billion last year, Paramount would certainly go after Bay.
Goldsman is also a bizarre choice to help lead this initiative. He won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind and his most recent project was the romantic drama Winter’s Tale. That said, his resume is splattered with a few blockbuster credits, including Insurgent, The Da Vinci Code and I Am Legend.
