The disgraced University of Oklahoma fraternity students, who were caught participating in a racist chant on a video that surfaced Sunday, have hired a high-powered lawyer very well known in the state.
KFOR News reported that some of the students and alum from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon's OU chapter may be looking to take legal action against the university and its president David Boren. And the man they’ve hired to do that is none other than Stephen Jones, the lawyer who defended Timothy McVeigh.
Most people in Oklahoma know both of those names. McVeigh was, of course, the man who detonated a truck bomb in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. The incident is often referred to as the Oklahoma City Bombing. He was put to death in 2001 and Jones is the attorney who represented him.
Now, the SAE students who retained the lawyer’s services may sue the school because, as Jones put it, the incident is being exploited.
As previously noted, the video was posted online and brought to the attention of Boren, who took swift action in severing ties with the fraternity, telling the occupants of the SAE house to move out and expelling two of the students.
The university's president also stressed that racism and bigotry will not be tolerated by any member of the Sooners family.
