Norman Greenbaum, the singer best known for the iconic ‘60s hit “Spirit in the Sky,” was critically injured in a car crash in California Saturday afternoon. A motorcyclist was killed in the crash.
The crash happened in Santa Rosa. California Highway Patrol did identify Greenbaum, 72, as the passenger in a Subaru Outback. He was rushed to a local hospital and was still listed in critical condition on Sunday afternoon, reports The Press-Democrat.
The crash is currently under investigation. Reuters notes that CHP said that the Subaru’s driver turned left without seeing the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was unable to stop and the two collided.
Three other people were involved in the crash. Ihab Usama Halaweh, 20, the driver of the motorcycle, died at the scene. Mekonnen Kahsay, 20, Halaweh’s passenger, was also rushed to the hospital and listed in critical condition. Lastly, the driver of the Subaru, Bonita Perea, 63, was not injured.
CHP believes that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Greenbaum is best known for his hit single “Spirit in the Sky,” which has been used in countless TV shows and movies, including Guardians of the Galaxy. It was first released in 1969.
