Fox’s version of Luther will not be reached TV any time soon. The project has been delayed and will be developed outside of the traditional pilot season after the network struggled to find a star.
The network had begun work on the project in November, when it was first announced that Fox had made a pilot commitment. Original series creator Neil Cross is set to write and executive produce, while original star Idris Elba will be among the producers.
In January, Fox put in a pilot order, but it turns out that it was contingent on getting a cast, which proved unsurprisingly problematic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marlon Wayans was considered for the lead role, but he’s not in at this point.
It’s no surprise that Fox has had trouble finding someone to play an American John Luther. Elba is closely identified with the role and won a Golden Globe for it as well.
The other issue is that it is pointless to do an American remake. Luther is readily available on Netflix and Elba is even filming a new two-part episode that will air on BBC America. And there are already enough American cop dramas about brilliant detectives.
