That was quick. Just three months after announcing plans to bring back The X-Files, Fox has officially greenlit a reboot of the beloved sci-fi series.
Fox made the announcement today, just days after it was reported that the network was close to giving it the go-ahead. The network said that the event series will feature just six episodes, but at least both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will find time to play FBI agents Mulder and Scully again.
“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” series creator Chris Carter said in a statement. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”
Filming on the new series will start this summer, with more details coming soon.
Back in January, Fox chiefs Dana Walden and Gary Newman first confirmed that the X-Files reboot was officially in development. It will be the second Fox series to get an event series reboot, following last year’s 24: Live Another Day. Newman and Walden also mentioned that they would like to do a Prison Break reboot as well.
The X-Files premiered in September 1993 and ran nine seasons, winning 16 Emmys along the way. Anderson, Duchovny and Carter also made two movies based on the series - The X-Files (1998) and The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008).
