Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti are set to star in a HBO film about the famous “battle of the sexes” tennis match between legends Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.
Banks, who just finished directing Pitch Perfect 2 will play King, while Giamatti will play Riggs. David Auburn (Proof) is set to write the script, notes Variety.
Executive producers on the project include Auburn, Playtone’s Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, Banks and Brownstone Productions’ Max Handleman, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
King and Riggs faced off in 1973, when King was just 29 and Riggs was 55. King came out on top.
The story is also being turned into a big screen film, starring Will Ferrell as Riggs. Titled Match Maker, the project was first announced in April 2014 and is based on the ESPN Magazine piece “The Match Maker: Bobby Riggs, the Mafia and the Battle of the Sexes.” Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions is producing with Chernin Entertainment.
The match has also been the subject for past movies, including 2001’s When Billie Beat Bobby with Holly Hunter and the 2013 documentary The Battle of the Sexes.
Banks just directed her first movie, Pitch Perfect 2. Giamatti will next be seen in San Andreas and Love & Mercy.
