Comedy Central president explains why picking Trevor Noah for 'Daily Show' was the right move

While Trevor Noah has yet to win over the hearts of The Daily Show’s viewers, the South African comedian has obviously won over the hearts of Comedy Central executives. Network president Michele Ganeless has made it clear that Noah is the right person for the job.

Comedy Central officially announced the decision this morning. Noah will have to replace Jon Stewart, who helped make The Daily Show Comedy Central’s flagship show. Stewart will be leaving later this year.

“Trevor Noah is an enormous talent. He has an insightful and unique point of view, and most importantly, is wickedly funny,” Ganeless said in a statement. “For the next host of The Daily Show, we set out to find a fresh voice who can speak to our audience with a keen take on the events of the day, and we found that in Trevor. He has a huge international following and is poised to explode here in America, and we are thrilled to have him join Comedy Central.”

Ganeless reiterated much of that in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, specifically driving the point that Noah brings a new world view to the show. Not only is Noah young at just 31, but he also has a diverse background.

“The world is becoming smaller and smaller every day, so having someone with a global perspective is important for us domestically, not to mention internationally,” Ganeless told THR. “The world seems to be shrinking in terms of the speed with which information gets disseminated and what people know of different parts of the world. And to have somebody who is very agile in that sense is a big plus for us.”

Ganeless said that it is completely coincidental that both of Comedy Central’s new late-night hosts are black. Noah will be paired with Larry Wilmore's Nightly Show, which replaced The Colbert Report earlier this year.

“Trevor and Larry were hired because they are the right people for these jobs,” Ganeless said.

While Ganeless insisted that Noan became the top choice after a long search (which did include discussions with women), it seemed like he became the best possible choice after others dropped out of contention. Plus, his hiring gives the show a chance to completely refresh. Although he has been on the show, he has only made three appearances, so he’s not as immediately identified by his work on the show exclusively.
