While Disney and Lucasfilm only like to use CG animation for Star Wars cartoons, one fan proved that you could make a great traditional, hand-drawn series for the franchise. After four years, YouTube user Paul Johnson finally finished his TIE Fighter anime film and it’s gone viral.

The video was only posted on Tuesday, but is already over 1 million views. It acts as a tribute to the iconic TIE Fighter PC game, complete with sounds and references. Johnson shows what a success would look like for the Empire, even letting a pilot shoot down Luke Skywalker.
He added a guitar solo by Zak Rahman and sound design by audio technician Joseph Leyva.
Johnson also made a film poster and character profiles.
Thankfully, this will probably survive on YouTube. Lucasfilm has a long history of supporting fan films, so the scandal that clouded the Power Rangers fan film won’t be a problem for Johnson’s work.
