Audra McDonald joins Disney's live action 'Beauty and the Beast'

The cast for Disney's new Beauty and the Beast is already pretty impressive, and now we have a new Broadway and TV star joining the cast.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Audra McDonald will be joining Beauty and the Beast. She'll be playing Garderobe, the talking/singing wardrobe from the 1991 film (originally just named Wardrobe).

In the movie, Wardrobe was one of the many servants of the castle placed under the curse. She originally had a song called "Human Again," which was cut from the film but can be seen on the deleted scenes. It seems pretty likely this song will be included in the upcoming film.

McDonald has had a successful career on Broadway, winning six Tony awards for her performances in Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, Porgy and Bess and Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill. That's more Tony wins than any other actor. She has also appeared in a number of roles on television including Dr. Naomi Bennett on Grey's Anatomy and its spinoff, Private Practice.

Disney's upcoming Beauty and the Beast will star Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as Beast and Luke Evans as Gaston. Also recently added to the cast were Josh Gad as Le Fou, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, and Kevin Kline as Maurice, as we previously reported.

Though Beauty and the Beast is based on the French fairy tale, the upcoming film seems to be taking inspiration mainly from the 1991 animated film.

This will be another one of Disney's live action remakes of their classic stories, with the most recent being Cinderella, which has already grossed $268 million at the box office.

Beauty and the Beast will begin production this May in London. It's scheduled to be released on March 17, 2017.
