Are '30 Rock' and 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' really in the same universe?

Anyone who has watched even a minute of Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt can tell instantly that it is a Tina Fey creation, thanks to its similar style to 30 Rock. But do they actually exist in the same universe? The co-creator herself has answered that question.

It seemed possible that the two shows could be linked, as the episode “Kimmy Kisses A Boy” features a construction worker who gets a compliment from Kimmy (Ellie Kemper). The actor also played a construction worker in a season five episode of 30 Rock, Entertainment Weekly pointed out.

E! News tracked down Fey, who co-created the show with 30 Rock writer Robert Carlock. She said that since Jane Krakowski stars in Kimmy Schmidt as a different character, “the universe would implode” if the two shows were linked.

Fey also gave herself a role in Kimmy Schmidt and it’s not as Liz Lemon. There was also a reference to Tracy Morgan, who can’t be both himself and Tracy Jordan in the same series. Indeed, Morgan will make an appearance on the show, which has already been picked up for a second season.

“Tracy has already told me that when he is well, he wants to be on the show and I said you got it,” Fey told E!.
