The subject of gender reassignment surgery and the transgender community has been a hot topic lately, with Bruce Jenner’s upcoming transition contributing to that dialogue.
CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful just debuted the first transgender character on cable television, following in the footsteps of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Amazon’s Transparent, and now ABC Family is jumping on that bandwagon.
Ryan Seacrest’s production company will debut Becoming Us this summer, a docu-series that focuses on a teenager whose father becomes a woman. The 17-year-old, Ben Lehwald, also has a girlfriend named Danielle, whose own father is transitioning from a man to a woman.
"I want to be able to provide guidance for kids who are going through it. Maybe this will help them being able to deal with it,” Lehwald told People.
ABC Family’s executive VP of programming and development, Karey Burke, also said in a statement, “This story in particular is really specific and beautiful and we loved that it's from the point of view of this teen boy just trying to figure it out.”
