We've been hearing about a possible sequel to Zoolander for years now, with Will Ferrell assuring us this past fall that the project was definitely happening. Now the movie is becoming real and not something in the distant future, as it now officially has a shooting date and location.
According to ScreenRant, Zoolander 2 will film in Rome over 12 weeks beginning this spring. The news came from Italian website Bad Taste. Rome’s mayor Ignazio Marino confirmed the news, noting that the movie will star both American and Italian actors.
Zoolander 2 will begin as Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel McDonald (Owen Wilson) have left the modeling world. Will Ferell said in September that the movie would be about how quickly the fashion world moves and begin with everyone having moved on from Derek and Hansel. The movie will then focus on them as they attempt to reinvent themselves.
The sequel to the hit 2001 comedy will be written by Ben Stiller and Justin Thereoux, with Thereoux also serving as director. He's taking over directing duties from Stiller, who directed the first movie.
So the question is no longer "is Zoolander 2 happening," it's now "will Zoolander 2 be able to live up to the original?" We've seen some other notable sequels to hit comedies recently with varying degrees of success. Anchorman 2 received decent reviews but was generally regarded by fans as not as good as the original. There was also Dumb and Dumber To released this past fall, which scored a pretty poor 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Could Zoolander 2 recapture the success of the original movie, or will it be another okay but pointless sequel that is just not as funny as the first one?
